The authors survey her compositions through 2001 and recount many of Van de Vate's anecdotes as told to them, revealing much about the origins of her compositions, feminist views, and musical theory. After tracing Van de Vate's tumultuous life experiences, both personal and professional, including teaching positions at various American universities and eventual residence in Vienna, the authors undertake a close examination of the composer's musical works. The chapters devoted to her music explore the composer's thematic and formal procedures, the use of modality, and her wide-ranging harmonic vocabulary, which give the music a unique voice within the context of a relatively dissonant style. Accompanying these analyses are copious musical examples from Van de Vate's large repertoire of scores. This book is further enhanced by an audio CD featuring the five large Van de Vate works, discussed in individual chapters, as well as portions of other characteristic compositions. With two bibliographies and three appendixes, this work will be invaluable to scholars of twentieth-century music and those specializing in women's studies;
