Abstract M. Camargo Guarnieri (1907-1993) is the best-known Brazilian composer after his older contemporary Heitor Villa-Lobos. Guarnieri composed in a nationalist style that combined a conservative but contemporary musical language with melodies and rhythms inspired by folk and popular materials. In addition to his numerous compositions for voice, symphony, and piano, he was very active as a teacher and administrator in Sao Paolo." "Verhaalen's first book-length study of Gaurnieri was published in Brazil, in Portuguese, by the University of Sao Paulo. The English version is revised and shortened to serve as an overview of his life and works. The book includes a CD compilation of some of Guarnieri's best-known works.
