Abstract Walter Rummel was educated in Berlin and enjoyed a major career from the 1920s until his death in 1953. Claude Debussy called him "the prince of virtuoso," and conductor Willem Mengelberg said he was "one of the greatest pianists I know." Rummel was a window on his time, an American who lived through two world wars in Europe and counted among his friends Ezra Pound, G.B. Shaw, and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium.

Biographical noteCharles Timbrell holds degrees in piano performance from Oberlin Conservatory, the University of Michigan, and the University of Maryland. He has performed throughout the United States and Europe and is the author of French Pianism (1999) and articles in The New Grove and the Cambridge Companion to Debussy. Dr. Timbrell was professor of music at Howard University in Washington D.C.
