Summary A digital groundwater model was developed to investigate the utilization of wells to inject, store, and recover treated drinking water in the Cretaceous Aquifer System near Greenville, North Carolina. The model was assembled using aquifer properties and recent equipotential maps and employed to simulate groundwater flow in the aquifers to be utilized for storage. Model simulations focus on potential aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) wells that will be utilized by Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) to inject and recover treated water. ASR wells will provide additional capacity to meet peak demands and will delay future expansion of the water treatment plant (WTP). The model simulates the use of ASR wells to improve water quality at existing GUC production wells by creating a pressure barrier of high quality water in the storage aquifers. The model indicates that such a pressure barrier will prevent lower quality water (with higher fluoride concentrations) from moving towards GUC's existing wells. The model was also used to investigate the use of recovery-only production wells. GUC will need to recover the stored water at pumping rates that are substantially higher than the injection rates. GUC can construct production wells to increase recovery rates without the use of additional, more costly ASR wells. Model simulations were used to demonstrate that production wells (next to an ASR well) could dramatically increase recovery rates.
