| Summary | A new teaching strategy for teaching art history is explored that will discuss the history of artist books. A rubric for creating artist books with secondary school art students is illustrated, and shown how it is an innovative method for teaching art history. It includes a brief look at current innovative art history teaching methods, and shows how the strategy meets a wide variety of state and national standards. The format of the artist book is introduced, as well as both the academic and personal results of students who have created an artist book. The students learned a new method of creating original and creative research about an artist using an interdisciplinary strategy. Students were more engaged using this format as opposed to a typical typed report about an artist's life and style of work. A sampling of student work is examined, including the actual artwork created and the letters and poems written by students. |
