545 a| Edward Barnes Ellis, Jr., donor of this collection, is a local historian who has preserved the history of Havelock, North Carolina, and its surrounding areas for many decades. A Craven County native and former member of the N.C. General Assembly, he has worked extensively in newspaper publishing and authored several books including In This Small Place, New Bern History 101, and Historic Images of Havelock and Cherry Point.;

520 2 a| The collection spans 1857-2021 and comprises over eleven cubic feet of papers compiled by local historian Edward Ellis documenting the history of Havelock and New Bern, N.C., the Civil War, Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station, and Sir Henry Havelock's influence. It contains aerial photographs (1938/1939, 1950), newspaper issues (including The New York Times from 1862 and periodicals from 1857 related to the war in India), and assorted ephemera and printed materials. Also included are historical files, manuscripts for Ellis's books, and ninety-seven photographs (1941) with indexes and maps documenting property adjacent to Havelock prior to demolition for Cherry Point Marine Air Station construction.;
