Herbert Floyd Seawell, Jr., papers, 1926-1983.

Scope and content The bulk of the collection concerns Seawell's legal career, specifically his civil cases and workman's compensation cases, especially those involving mill workers and silicosis. Numerous files pertain to legal work for the community, including the incorporation of Pinehurst, the Hemp Sanitary District, road improvements and repairs, Seawell's involvement in the name change of the town of Hemp to Robbins, and the Fayetteville Historical Celebration. Correspondence concerning World War II mentions Germany's war preparations, the bombing of Freiburg, the takeover of Norway, entertainment of soldiers, rationing, and the organization of a Red Cross chapter in Moore County; civil rights; and temperance. Political materials document Seawell's involvement in the Republican Party, candidacy for governor in 1952, role in a controversy over an appointment as United States Attorney for the Middle District; and support of Dwight Eisenhower, Jesse Helms, and I. Beverly Lake, Jr. Other materials concern the Congressional Club, American Party, the Gospel Chapel Mission in Carthage, and his activities with the Christian Business Men's Committee and the Full Gospel Business Men's International. Prominent correspondents include his son-in-law, Dr. Paul Freed and Theron Lamar Caudle, who discusses his trial on charges of conspiracy to defraud the federal government. Also contains information on family estates, family genealogy, and Seawell and McNeill legal documents.

Biographical noteHerbert Floyd Seawell, Jr., (1904-1983) was the son of Herbert Floyd Seawell, Sr., and Ella McNeill Seawell of Moore County, N.C. He attended Wake Forest College and as an attorney joined his father in the firm of Seawell and Seawell in Carthage, N.C. He served as Referee Bankruptcy; was active in his community, serving as a member of the Board of Commissioners for the town of Carthage and as town attorney; and was a trustee of Gospel Chapel Mission. In 1952, he ran as a Republican candidate for governor. In early 1970s, Seawell joined the American party and ran for governor on that ticket in 1976. He published two books, Sir Walter, The Earl of Chatham and Satire in Solid Skitches and made guest appearances with Jesse Helms on WRAL-TV. In 1971, he formed the firm of Seawell, Pollock, Fullenwider, Van Camp, and Robbins.
