| Scope and content | Diaries from Private Joseph E. Mabbett's service aboard the USS North Carolina provide observations of the shipboard activities of marines and sailors. Entries record operational information of the ship, such as data concerning drills and practices, and include descriptions of the ship's positions at sea, supplementary maps, locations and descriptions of lighthouses and light ships, and the identification codes of U.S. Navy ships. Diaries also include a chart showing the route of the USS North Carolina, illustrations of conning tower and smokestack arrangements that identify the fleet ships, a mileage chart of longitude, a map of scouting maneuvers, a record of speed trials, and target practice scores. Diaries contain clippings of newspaper and magazine articles, poems, prayers, and song lyrics. Also included are cigarette box pictures of lighthouses of the United States, magazine pictures of various ships and landscapes, snapshots showing scenes from the cruise to Guantanamo Bay, mounted photographs of the USS North Carolina and the Marine Guard aboard the North Carolina, and photograph album pages of images of Marines at Guantanamo Bay. |

| Biographical note | Private Joseph E. Mabbett was part of the Marine Guard stationed on board the armored cruiser USS North Carolina, which was commissioned in 1908. During the Cuban Pacification in 1908-1909, Mabbett was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. |
