| Scope and content | United States Naval Academy materials include a scrapbook containing clippings, photographs, and pamphlets pertaining to the campus and student life. Photographs related to a 1923 practice cruise include views of the USS North Dakota, various European cities, Nova Scotia, Panama, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, and the World's Exposition of 1923. Orders, reports, and memorandums concern Johns's various assignments and discuss the grounding of the USS S-38 near Saddle Island, structural defects of the USS Bonita, training methods, the sale of submarines to Turkey, and the Office of Priorities and Controls of the Munitions Board. Photographs and printed material concern the construction, launching, and service of the USS Nautilus, USS Cuttlefish, and USS Seadragon. USS Seadragon materials include a photograph of President Franklin Roosevelt and a scrapbook documenting Johns's command of the submarine. Other photographs depict the USS Dashiell, USS Dortch, USS Caperton, USS Tarpon, Chester W. Nimitz, and Maurice Edwin Curts. Other materials include Johns's transcripts, fitness reports, awards, and certificates; charts concerning submarine training in Panama; genealogical notes concerning the Lober and Reynolds families; and a mimeographed book, The Diary of a Big-Game Hunter with Gun and Camera in Indo-China. |

| Biographical note | John Graham Johns, a native of Kenton, Del., was an officer in the United States Navy. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1925, Johns served aboard submarines and commanded submarine squadrons and divisions. Prior to his retirement with the rank of rear admiral in 1955, Johns worked at the Office of Priorities and Controls of the Munitions Board. Johns received several awards, including the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. |
