Scope and content Correspondence and other material concern Taylor's term as lieutenant governor. Topics include the 50th anniversary of Charles B. Aycock's inauguration as governor, a memorial for Josephus Daniels, the Better Schools and Roads Corporation, the State Board of Education, and the Commission on Interstate Cooperation. Also contains Taylor's campaign materials. Other materials concern Democratic Party politics in North Carolina, including Taylor's attendance at the 1948 and 1952 National Democratic Conventions and the 1958 State Democratic Convention, and William B. Umstead's political career. Correspondence and other records relate to Taylor's private practice and work as the attorney for Anson County and Ansonville. Includes files from Taylor's work as a trustee of Meredith College and the University of North Carolina. Personal correspondence, the bulk of which is from Kate (Ward) Taylor, concerns family matters. Other personal papers reflect the efforts of Taylor and his mother to settle the estate of Simeon P. Taylor and the muscular dystrophy of his son, Frank Wooten. Materials also concern Taylor's World War I service and his membership in the Association of Officers to the 371st Infantry. Also includes materials concerning T. Lamar Caudle's dismissal from the Department of Justice and Taylor's efforts to have him paroled.

Biographical noteHoyt Patrick Taylor, Sr. (1890-1964) was Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina from 1948 to 1953. A native of Winton, N.C., he served as a second lieutenant in the 371st Infantry during World War I. He practiced law in Wadesboro, N.C., first in his own firm and later with Congressman A. Paul Kitchin. An active Democrat, Taylor served as mayor of Wadesboro, as chairman of the Anson County Democratic Executive Committee, and as a member of the North Carolina Senate. He served as a trustee of the University of North Carolina and Meredith College. Taylor and his wife Inez Wooten had three children: Hoyt Patrick Taylor, Jr., Caroline Corbett Taylor, and Frank Wooten Taylor.
