| Scope and content | Most of the material in this collection relates to Wayne County land transactions. This includes land grants in the Nahunta Swamp region and deeds for other property located in the same area. These land transactions date from 1794 to 1859, involve several members of the Edgerton family, and transfer tracts of land ranging in size from 25 to 1,853 acres. An 1853 Johnston County deed also involves a member of the Edgerton family. Plats in the collection illustrate property holdings in the vicinity of Nahunta Swamp. Also included are two land surveys not accompanied by plats. Miscellaneous material includes a power of attorney document; contract authorizing the construction of a white school on land owned by Michael Edgerton; an account listing prices brought at a sale of household property and farm products belonging to Nathan Davis of Wayne County; and a copy of the April 1886 edition of the Raleigh newspaper, The North Carolina farmer, which discusses general farm news and advises farmers how to contend with the over-supply of cotton. |
