Scope and content Correspondence reflects Jack Maginnis's career as a naval officer. Early letters from American Consulate General Willys R. Peck evaluate Japanese military activity in the Chinese cities of Pukow, Hsiakuan, and Nanking (1932). Other letters concern the transmission and reproduction of codes and ciphers between the United States and Britain during World War II. A related report consists of meeting notes concerning meteorological work and the need for enciphering wireless weather transmissions to England. Remaining correspondence deals with the bombardment of the USS IRWIN and subsequent wounding of Maginnis by North Korean forces during the Korean War. Diaries describe Maginnis's trip to London and the progress of World War II in the city, as well as his command of the USS SALEM in 1955. Notes on China describe the USS MINNEAPOLIS's diplomatic efforts at Chefoo, Weihawei, Liukung Tao Island, Chinwangtao, and Peitaiho (1945). Photographs pertain primarily to the USS MINNEAPOLIS and the USS SALEM. Other photographs reflect the logging of mahogany trees in Liberia. Miscellaneous items include a muster roll of the USS BLACK, news releases relating the wartime histories of the USS MINNESOTA and USS SALEM, and a history of the USS WINSTON. Unrelated items include an allotment form and a commissary list for the USS CONSTITUTION.
