George Willcox McIver papers, 1852-2004, undated.

Abstract Papers include a memoir, correspondence, genealogical materials, publications, and artifacts. The memoir describes life at West Point; the Spanish-American War, including health conditions, leadership, and the battles of San Juan Hill and El Caney; the Musketry School at Monterey, Calif.; duties while in the Philippines and as executive officer of the Militia Bureau in Washington, D.C.; the 81st Division during World War I, including training, a Cherokee and Croatan Indian company from North Carolina, trench warfare, Meuse-Argonne offensive, casualty statistics, and the French and German towns through which the American Expeditionary Force passed. Correspondence consists of letters from McIver to his family written while in England, France, Scotland, and at sea. Also includes books from McIver's personal library and publications written by McIver. Genealogical materials concern the McIver, Smedberg, Willcox, and Hart families.

Biographical noteGeorge Willcox McIver (1858-1947), a native of Carthage, N.C., was the son of Alexander McIver, a noted North Carolina educator, and Mary Ann Willcox. He served for forty years in the United States military, including duty in the United States, Alaska, Cuba, France, and the Philippine Islands.
