Most of the collection consists of official U.S. Navy documents. They concern the operations of the task force commanded by Admiral Ainsworth (December 10, 1942 to June 4, 1944) in the Solomon Islands Campaign. The documents detail naval operations, plans for the operations, statistics, and dispatches of congratulations and encouragement. Other materials include: press releases, reports, photographs, pamphlets, and an annual. |

Biographical note | Walden Lee ("Pug") Ainsworth was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on November 10, 1886 and died on August 7, 1960. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and commanded a destroyer squadron, the U.S.S. MISSISSIPPI and the Pacific Fleet. In December, 1942, he took command of cruiser-destroyer task forces in the Solomon Islands. After the conclusion of World War II, Ainsworth was Commandant Fifth Naval District from August 22, 1945, until his retirement on December 1, 1948. |
