| Abstract | About seventy years ago a young man was sitting in a room in a city which was then known as Helsingfors. He was supposed to be studying law, but actually he was dreaming about music, and hearing, in his mind's ear, some of the themes that were later to be woven into the greatest of modern symphonies. Young Jean Sibelius did not know his destiny then, but he did know that Finland must be free, and that the soul of Finland, its lakes and rivers, its folk songs and the great epic of the Kalevala were what he wanted to capture in music. And as the years passed his country grew strong and was free, and his music became famous, so famous that today no one doubts its greatness. Finlandia grew out of two related enthusiasms: the author's love of the music of Sibelius, and his deep admiration for the Finnish people. Some years ago, when he was traveling in Europe, the author made a special pilgrimage to Sibelius' country home outside Helsinki, and what he saw of Finland in the course of that trip made him feel that its history and its people held a meaning for his own country. He saw, too, how deeply the music of Sibelius was the music of Finland, of its lakes, hills, rivers, and people. The outline of Finlandia took shape in his mind at that time, and when he learned that there was no biography of Jean Sibelius available for younger American readers, he determined to write this volume. |
