| Summary | Previous stock discrimination studies for striped bass Morone saxatilis have conflicting results. However, little is known about the variability of striped bass populations within a single watershed. The Roanoke River population in North Carolina has been described by early 20th century investigators and fishers as having two or more distinctly unique body styles- a "long rock" or elongated body earlier in the season, followed by a "short rock" or deeper bodied fish later in the season. Genetic variability within the Roanoke River population of striped bass was identified in the early 1990s. In 1999, the Roanoke River population was sampled periodically during the prespawning, spawning, and postspawning periods. Genetic, meristic, and morphometric analyses were used to ascertain differences among fish within the population. Sequencing of mtDNA revealed the presence of at least three genetic variants within the 1999 spawning population. The two body styles previously described were not observed in this study. However, morphometric analysis indicated that one of the genotypic classes found in the spring 1999 spawning run could be distinguished from the others on the basis of the derived variable, pectoral length - anal length, which was significantly different among genotypes. The means and ranges of meristic characters and morphometric ratios were stable within this population but varied from those reported for other watersheds. |
