Abstract Georg Muffat was one of the most cosmopolitan composers of the seventeenth century. Born of Scottish and French ancestry in Alsace, he studied in France and Germany, traveled to Vienna, Prague, and Augsburg, and worked in Salzburg, Passau, and Rome. Muffat believed that the combination of elements from various national styles could produce music more profound and delightful than music from a single national style. This book offers a unique presentation of the composer's writings about music. This new translations from the German presents Muffat's texts along with variants from the composer's French, Italian, and Latin versions. This highly readable supplementary materials make this a useful work for theorists, historians, and performers.
