| Summary | The influence of messianism on the Jewish revolt against Rome of A.D. 65 is discussed in this thesis. The principal argument is that during the first century A.D. a large portion of the Jews of Palestine believed that the messianic age was at hand, and that God would in some way bring about the ascendance of the Jewish nation over the rest of the world. The thesis is divided into five chapters, each of which attempts to give one portion of the argument. The preface gives a brief history of what is called "the second temple period," which begins with the return of the Jews from Babylon during the 530s B.C., and extends to the destruction of the temple by the Romans in A.D. 70. The primary sources used are the writings of Josephus, the Bible, the Pseudepigrapha and Apocrypha, Tacitus and Suetonius. |
