| Summary | This project sought to assess the relationship between athletic identity and life experiences of elite female wheelchair basketball players using the Athletic Identification Measurement Scale (AIMS). An additional 18 questions on demographic data and pertinent personal attribute information were obtained via a questionnaire. Participants were competitors in the 2000 Walker Cup International Wheelchair Basketball Challenge. Independent variables included: age of initial involvement in organized sports, accumulated seasons for wheelchair basketball experience, involvement in other wheelchair sports, etiology of disability, social support networks and pathway into wheelchair sports. Bi-variate hypotheses were tested using ANOVA, Independent Samples T-test and Pearson correlations as appropriate given the level of measurement. Statistically significant results included moderate and positive correlation between the AIMS and the following independent variables: age when began organized sports, accumulated seasons of playing wheelchair basketball and attending meetings or programs of groups or clubs. Communicating with friends, family and other acquaintances via the phone or e-mail was moderately and negatively correlated with the AIMS. Discussion of these results along with implications for further research are presented. |
