The two hundred year history of American piano methods reveals the impact of highly diverse forces within the institutions of culture, society and education. From the earliest known indigenous piano tutor in 1796 to recent computer-assisted keyboard methods, the development of piano teaching materials has been propelled by scientific investigations, technological advances, shifting cultural values, educational trends, psychological research, technical requirements of concert repertoire, and the goals or perceived needs of pianists. This dissertation documents innovative, influential and representative piano methods of the United States, presenting them within a historical context of interacting cultural, societal and educational trends. The text provides a descriptive analysis of content and teaching philosophy for over one hundred instruction books or series published in the United States, appended by a chronological, annotated bibliography of over five hundred titles which were located during the course of the research. |
