| Summary | The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate how a single architectural structure built in 1818 in Berlin has symbolized the widely disparate political climates in Germany from the early nineteenth century until the present. To accomplish this, an historical examination of the various methods in which Die Neue Wache has been utilized by the numerous political entities that have ruled Germany throughout the past two centuries was conducted. This thesis will show that each governmental regime has used the building in a manner that distinctly and accurately represented the prevalent political ideology of the time. From its original use as a barracks to house the King's Guard to the current and controversial role as Germany's central war memorial, the history of Die Neue Wache provides a clear representation of German political history unlike that of any other architectural structure in Berlin. |
