General noteThe unique original, printed about 1580 in Edinburgh by Alexander Arbuthnet, lacks t.-p. and 4 leaves of signature I. It is a free Scottish version of two French poems, which form parts of the Roman d'Alexandre; "Les voeus du paon", by Jacques de Longuyon, with part of "Li fuerres de Gadres" prefixed, the latter by one Eustache, rewritten by Alexandre de Bernay.
General noteThe introduction (v. 1, p.[xiii]-cclxxxiv) contains a full discussion of Barbour's authorship, which is disputed, and comparison between the "Buik" and his "Bruce".
