| Abstract | Gilbert and Sullivan go together as naturally as roast beef and Yorkshire pudding: they are as enduring a British institution as Westminster Abbey or Harrods. Audiences laughed at their light-hearted but sharply satirical creations over a hundred years ago, and they are still laughing today the world over. But this most famous of musical comedy partnerships might never have got off the ground. Gilbert and Sullivan met by chance, and after an initial collaboration it was largely due to the vision and persistence of Richard D'Oyly Carte that they persevered in a working relationship that was to last 25 years. Both men became enormously wealthy, but they started out from very different social backgrounds: Gilbert's affluent middle-class; Sullivan's hard-up working class. Gilbert received a gentleman's education as a matter of course; Sullivan had only his musical talent to rely on. The two men never really got on, and their relationship was frequently acrimonious. So if you thought that Gilbert and Sullivan went together as well as their words and music do, this revealing and copiously illustrated new biography will have some surprises in store. |
