| Summary | The population and city limits of Greenville, North Carolina, have been rapidly expanding since the 1960's. One of the most dramatic increases in city limit area (24 percent) occurred from 1980 to 1990. This expansion has significantly affected a tributary to the Tar River, Greens Mill Run, which collects over 60 percent of the city's runoff south of the Tar River. Greens Mill Run is only 7.1 miles in length and the 16.5 square mile watershed extends outside the city limits into rural Pitt County. In 1981 the USGS installed a continuous record gaging station at Arlington Boulevard as part of a Coastal Plain urban-hydrology study. Discharge data were collected from 1981 to 1985. During the study period, November 1997 through October 1998, the stream was gaged at the same location and a flow-duration curve was developed to analyze the streamflow characteristics. A comparison of the plots shows a deviation from the 1981-85 curve. The new duration curve has a steeper slope and the median discharge value has decreased from 5.1 cubic feet per second to 4.3 cubic feet per second. The lowest discharge on record for the 1997-1998 period is 0.39 cubic feet per second, while the lowest discharge for the 1981-1985 period was 0.65 cubic feet per second. The peak discharges for both time periods are similar due to the intense rainfall associated with hurricanes. A simple water balance equation was formulated for the watershed and used to develop a water budget that provides insight into the ground water and evapotranspiration within the watershed. |
