| Abstract | "General Charles A. Horner commanded the most successful air campaign in modern history. The Gulf War of 1991, Operation Desert Storm, was a master class in air warfare compared to any application of military force since World War II. It set new standards for what the public, politicians, and military leaders expected from airpower; it represented a new phase in the evolution of military operations, capabilities, and effectiveness. This book examines Horner's command and leadership during Operation Desert Storm, assessed in the framework of two key components: professional mastery and personal qualities. It examines the professional training, education, and personal experiences that Horner accumulated over the years before he was put to the test as the first U.S. wartime joint force air component commander. The book discusses the authority Horner was given and how he used it, his relationships with the theater commander and his fellow component commanders, his leadership style, and his approach to Coalition warfare. The book also explores the factors that influenced him in the context of the times in which he served on active duty, which spanned the years 1958 to 1994"-- Provided by publisher. |
