Abstract "Maritime deterrence is the creation and display of naval power to discourage attack. This book explores the importance of deterrence at sea for peace and how it differs from deterrence on land. Adam Lockyer examines four types of maritime deterrence strategies: offensive sea control, defensive sea control, offensive sea denial, and defensive sea denial. These strategies can be mobilized by communicating that one or more of them will be attempted in a crisis and have a high likelihood of succeeding. Defensive strategies aim to use sea power in the deterrer's own maritime environment and offensive strategies promise to retaliate by taking the fight to the transgressor. This book revives and updates our understanding of maritime deterrence for the twenty-first century. In particular, Adam Lockyer uses examples from throughout history and conducts an in-depth examination of deterrence in the US Maritime Strategy in the Pacific during the late Cold War and connects its relevance to US-China competition today"-- Provided by publisher.
