| Abstract | "This book tells a new story about Hamlet, exposing how the play's key philosophical concerns are also significant factors in the work's own bibliographical history. Eddie Burton analyses how Hamlet has evolved, how the play continues to be activated, and how it speaks to us about modern approaches to literature. Burton begins with an account of Hamlet's antecedent texts and a framing of the three major early editions that have dominated Hamlet scholarship: Q1, Q2 and F. He then details how editorial practices and theories on the play's provenance have impacted the work's nature. The main chapters of the book make a close reading of the play's philosophy, focusing on the concept of authenticity, the issue of multiples, and the relationship between words and truth. Alongside this is a consideration of recent approaches to making theatre, with a particular focus on the ideas of Declan Donnellan, and an exploration of the ways in which we actively participate in the creation of works of art.
