| Abstract | "As of 2020, there are over nine million American Indian and Alaska Native citizens in the United States, belonging to 574 federally recognized Indian nations. Native governments control nearly one hundred million acres of land, an area that, if put together, would constitute the fourth largest state in the country. Native people differ politically, religiously, and geographically, but what all Native Americans have in common is a history of contesting the overriding dominance of the United States government--including fighting for the right to define their citizenship. Indigenous Citizens chronicles Native Americans' efforts both to preserve tribal autonomy and secure the civil rights accorded to all American citizens, from the American Revolution to the 2020 presidential election. Weaving together Native people's experiences negotiating tribal, state, and national citizenship, historian Paul Rosier examines a variety of topics, including Indian treaties, removal from their original lands, federal boarding schools, wartime service, the forced selling of their land in Indian country, and civil rights. In 1924, the Indian Citizenship Act granted U.S. citizenship to all Native Americans and Alaska Natives, whether they wanted it or not, codifying a dual citizenship that exists to this day. Rosier seeks to answer several important questions at the heart of this status: Why did Native people embrace or resist American citizenship at particular moments in time?
