| Abstract |
How do we make meaningful design, and discuss the making of design, when faced with the many inequities of local spaces and global places? Reimagining Latin American Fashion invites readers to engage with these key questions, and in contemporary debates around decolonisation, sustainability, and poverty, in the context of Latin American fashion production and design. With its publication in 2005, The Latin American Fashion Reader established a more diverse and inclusive approach to fashion, bringing about explorations of historical foundations, altered cultural landscapes, and the potential to understand more fully consumption trends. Since then, the development of multiple jobs throughout the globe offering up new platforms and outlets has furthered Latin American fashion's presence on the international stage. At the same time, increased concern for decolonization, increased representation, sustainability, and political upheavals, have necessitated new ways to consider Latin American fashion's historical traditions and current celebrated achievements. Taking up the story where The Latin American Fashion Reader left off, this multi-authored book allows contributors, many of whom have experienced challenges to their craft and work, to share experiences, ideas, and knowledge, offering an exciting new entry point into the debates around Latin American fashion studies for a reader who seeks to enter the conversation and continue to build upon and reinvigorate the field. |
