| Abstract | "Neilos of Ancyra (Ankyra, Ankara) is a 4th-5th century monk and later bishop in Anatolia (modern Turkey). He wrote a number of works and 1,000 letters. The three works gathered here are Brief Statements of Exhortation, Guidance that Leads a Person Away from What is Corruptible and Unites that Person with What is Incorruptible, and Concerning the Eight Evil Thoughts. There is a general introduction, and introductions for each of the works. The three works are apophthegmatic, that is, within the tradition of the Apophthegmata, The Sayings and Stories of the Desert Fathers and Mothers; the author has published a two-volume translation of the alphabetical sayings. Neilos of Ancyra presents the first modern-language translations of the three works. Further, directly below the translation of each saying is the Greek text from Patrologia Graeca 79. In addition to the introductions, the volume provides copious notes with contextual information, biblical references, and an extensive glossary with information about key words in the texts. The author has written the volume for scholarly, monastic, and general audiences. The focus is on early-monastic spirituality, and-most important-what that spirituality can still offer to modern audiences; as with the Apophthegmata, sayings, readers can use the sayings here for contemplative reading and reflection. In an effort to make the book relevant to modern audiences, introductions include the use of numerous references to contemporary media posts, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
