| Abstract | "A realistic view of the past should provide a critical understanding of the present, in which discourse producers (including translators and interpreters) must be seen in their socio-political context. Communication is often hindered by linguistic, cultural, or behavioral differences in the interaction between service providers and seekers. While there is an extensive literature on discrimination, its causes (sex, gender, religion), contexts (workplace discrimination, border areas), or consequences (stress, self-stigma, distress), the narratives behind discrimination seem to be less explored from a communicative perspective. This volume discusses narratives of otherness and their (un)conscious presence in policies, socio-professional relations, and non-discriminatory correctives, while providing answers on non-regulated language provision in integrative measures, ethical issues of the interpreter-mediator dichotomy, or psychological dimensions of grieving, among other candent issues"-- Provided by publisher. |
