| Abstract | "Transformative Reading belongs to a growing tradition of studies investigating the functions of aesthetic experiences in our lives. Philosophers, literary theorists and psychologists have suggested that aesthetic experiences implicate the self. In challenging readers, stimulating and extending their imagination by means of complex or deviating plots, literary texts (in contrast with non-literary ones) may promote readers' understandings of themselves and others by altering readers' sense of self, thus possibly playing an important role in enhancing such awareness. Reading literary narrative fiction helps readers develop new possible selves in a safe way and imagine what it might be like to be in the shoes of others, thus developing readers' theory of mind. It might also contribute to the development of readers' interpersonal competencies and foster moral enhancement in terms of pro-sociality, altruistic behaviour and empathy. This book focuses on the processes of literary reading, revealing two pathways for such transformative powers of literature. It also paves the way for how these pathways are applicable in educational settings - in schools, at the workplace, and at medical ethics contexts"-- Provided by publisher. |
