| Abstract | "Devastated by the French military defeat in May, 1940, some young men set up and developed an institution for training leaders for the kind of country they wanted France to become. The ineffectiveness of the Maginot line in providing protection was symbolic of the weakness of the whole of pre-war French society. Funded at first by the Vichy government, the 'école de cadres' at Uriage became a key part of its youth policy. The école was closed down at the end of 1942 because it opposed collaboration with the Nazis. A remnant moved to the edge of the Vercors to give assistance to resistance groups. This team prepared a text, a 'summa', which assembled the ideas which had been discussed in the école and had been the basis of its practice: Vers le style du XXe siècle [towards a life-style for the 20th Century]. They called for a new humanity, but there can be no 'new man', they concluded, without changes in education, no educational changes without socio-economic ones, and none at all without revolution. This book is not just a re-presentation of that original text. Derek Robbins has provided an abridged translation of the book, but he also examines the background to its production and its influence. How far did its ideas reflect the social backgrounds of the authors? How much did they sustain their vision in their post-war careers? How far can change be promoted just in a text? This is the question for our time as we assess competing visions of the 'new normal'"-- Provided by publisher. |
