| Abstract | "In both past and modern societies the concepts of memory and identity have been inextricably intertwined. Memory, through its power of recollection and reflection, acts as a central and necessary pathway for self-discovery, self-expression, and self-knowledge as well as increasing our understanding of the physical and spiritual world. Memory, in this way, becomes fundamental to identity itself, as it is through the complex process of both group and individual recollection and commemoration that cultural, political, national, religious, and gender identities are not only imagined but constructed, reconstructed, and represented. This intriguing topic was extensively explored in a medieval and early modern European context at the 2016 Borderlines conference held in Trinity College, Dublin. This book's authors, all of whom presented papers at this conference, each considers in original, creative, and truly interdisciplinary ways the essential relationship of memory and identity and the exciting interplay between them. Memory and identity thus provides a valuable lens in these essays to illuminate and intellectually inform a great variety of fields and subjects in the medieval and early modern world"-- Provided by publisher. |
