| Abstract | "This edited book argues that a new perspective on immigration is needed: as Western societies age, and their populations stagnate or decline, and immigrants are increasingly required, the old view that it is a privilege for immigrants to move from less developed to more developed countries needs to be replaced by questions about how attractive host countries are to immigrants, and not just in economic, but also in social, political and cultural terms. Considering in detail the situation in Japan and Germany - Japan where there are hardly any Japanese behind cash registers in convenience stores, Germany where retirement homes would no longer function without foreign nursing staff - the book analyses the needs of host countries from a demographic standpoint, the desires of migrants in terms of education, training, and labour market participation, and policies and actions on the part of the state and civil society in rendering moving to and living in these countries worthwhile.
