| Abstract | "Using largely untapped local press and archive sources, five of these six essays trace the historical emergence of a professionalised sport out of the family of pastimes that were traditional 'football.' The first describes how one such traditional game, played in Alnwick, Northumberland, was altered by the emergence of modern football codes, a second analyses the developments in play that made early soccer in the north-east an attractive spectator sport. The third and fourth essays trace the rapid development of commercialised soccer in Newcastle and Sunderland in the 1880s, its effects on the people who played it, administered and supported it, and its relations with the local press. The final historical essay recounts the 'Crook Town affair, a once-famous 1920s 'shamateurist' football scandal in County Durham. A concluding chapter relates this history to the state of professional soccer today. It suggests that the visual excitement and beauty that created soccer as a mass spectator sport continues, but so do the morally dubious effects of their commercial exploitation. The author expresses his profound ambiguity about the deep 'commodification' of modern soccer, an ambiguity shared by many other football fans"-- Provided by publisher. |
