Abstract "This chapter gives a brief introduction to a biosensor's constituents, classification of bio-recognition elements, and operating principle. It provides a brief historical overview of the different biosensing, bio-receptor, and biosensor markets in detail. It discusses the requirement for ultrasensitive biosensors with sensitivities in the nano, femto, and pico ranges due to their increasing demand to detect diseases at an early stage. Different sections of Chapter 1 are classified on the basis of bioreceptor types that include nucleic acids, aptamers, enzymes, antibodies, bacteriophages, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP), and whole-cell-based biosensors. A short description of electrochemical (ECL) and optical biosensors (plasmonic, interferometric, colorimetric, surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based, fluorescence-based, photonic crystal-fiber (PCF)-based, and mass-based biosensors) has been discussed in detail. Each type of biosensor design involves different phenomena such as fluorescence, absorbance, scattering, polarization, interference, color change, mass change, and luminescence. It also includes the primary obstacles, limitations, cons, pros, and future prospects for the commercialization of different sensing platforms"-- Provided by publisher.
