| Abstract | "This book analyzes selected works by Haitian writers such Massillon Coicou (1867-1908), Jacques Roumain (1907-1944), Jean Claude-Martineau (1937- ), Emmanuel Védrine (1959- ) Anne Christine D'Adesky (1958- ) and the Martinican author Aimé Césaire (1913-2008). It elucidates the development of Haiti's political, economic, and social structures from 1892-1994. This research helps to understand some historical events that took place in Haiti during the 19th and 20th centuries as well as their aftermath. Each work analyzed presents another dimension to commonly referenced issues about Haiti. For example, Aimé Césaire's play "La tragédie du roi Christophe" highlights the difficulty of building a nation after the colonization of Saint-Domingue while Massillon Coicou's poem "Complaintes d'Esclave" points out the impact of slavery and the Catholic Church on Haitian thought. Jacques Roumain's poem "Nouveau Sermon Nègre" helps to further comprehend the negative influence of the Catholic Church on Haitian society and the effect of the American occupation of Haiti. Anne Christine-D'Adesky's novel "Under the Bone" depicts the sadistic nature of the Duvalier regimes. Jean Claude-Martineau's song "Vyejo" helps to explore Haitian migration to the Dominican Republic and its power on relationships, families, and marriages. Emmanuel Védrine's poem "Manman pa ban m tete ankò" written in Haitian Creole is a cry of revolt against the international community's involvement in Haitian affairs. Taken together, these works written in three languages (French, Haitian Creole, and English), show the richness and linguistic variety of Haitian literature as well as tensions between Haitian Creole and French. This study is innovative because the translation of the works presented here written in French and Haitian Creole into English will provide the anglophone world the opportunity to be exposed to distinguished Haitian writings that might otherwise be challenging to access. Moreover, although readers may be familiar with Haiti's misfortunes, the process by which Haiti became the recipient of so many hardships is not necessarily easily discernible.
