| Abstract | "Artifact weighs what it means to live in a place where students and their teachers get gunned down on a regular basis. It asks how we can continue to learn and teach and live when nothing changes in response to these deaths. It attempts to speak into silence, to look at the pain of those who have come through trauma, and to meet their gazes without platitudes or triumphalism. Each college campus shooting leaves a record: archival collections, monuments to the dead, government-led inquiries, internal university investigations, and lawsuits. And there are also the scars, colostomy bags, chronic pain, brain damage, vision loss, wheelchairs, service dogs, nightmares, sleeplessness, and anxiety. Artifact examines a series of university and college campus shootings that involve students and faculty of those institutions. In each case, I arrive at the site of an attack long after the killings have taken place. By the time I come, at least two years have passed. The teddy bears, flowers, and crosses of makeshift memorials have been cleared away, and prying journalists are long gone. For this project, I have sorted through myriad objects left at makeshift memorial sites. I have talked for hours with a professor who survived an attack only because her colleague's gun jammed as it was pointed at her head. I have wandered and documented the refurbished and reconfigured buildings made unrecognizable after the horrors that occurred inside them. I have read tedious court transcripts, officious government-commissioned reports, a troubling memoir written by a shooter's mother, and sifted through the mathematics papers that one campus shooter publishes from his prison cell"-- Provided by publisher. |
