Abstract "Domesticating Brown theorizes brownness as a racial category associated with conquest and colonial encounter and as a multitudinous racial admixture that is understood differently depending on the context in which it appears-at once denoting social marginalization and racial passing. Christopher Patterson examines the structure of transpacific brownness, identifying the geographical and historical places where brownness was identified as unruly and slated for domestication, control, and containment. Tracing brownness across the Mongol empire, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Hawai'i, and North America, Patterson collages personal narrative with history to illustrate the lived experience of brownness within racial capitalism"-- Provided by publisher.
