Abstract "Tension examines rapid development in the Western Himalayas and its effects on the minds and bodies of the local Gaddi people. Nikita Kuar Simpson tells the story of "tension" as it has come to settle in the homes and bodies of the Gaddi. Rather than seeking "tension" in the psychiatric hospital or healing shrine, this book dwells in spaces of intimate care and conflict and shows how "tension" runs along intersecting forms of caste, class, tribal and gendered difference. It argues that inequality is generated in the uneven absorption and expression of distress. It offers "tension" as an emic, relational theory of distress that speaks back to both individualizing psychiatric diagnostics and generalizing narratives of structural transformation. At once an account of politico-economic and environmental shifts in the last century, a cartography of care relations, and a multi-sensory exploration of the intimate experiences of atmosphere and body, Tension puts forth a theory of distress that speaks back to both Western psychiatric models of mental illness and dominant narratives of Global South development"-- Provided by publisher.
