Abstract "Franz Simandl's 30 etudes have been a staple in the double bass pedagogy for good reason. They provide excellent training in the orchestral register of the instrument and introduce guidelines that every player needs in their skillset: how to choose fingerings, how to pattern bowings for common rhythms, tone control in different registers, string crossings, and looking for patterns in musical form. But without a guide to the etudes, it is possible to learn them and still miss the heart of the technical elements. This annotated edition seeks to fill in the 'why' and the 'how' behind the 'what' of the etudes. Why do we shift in certain patterns? How do we know which bowstroke to use on a pick-up note? What is a practical bowing for common rhythmic patterns? Where will the technical skills learned in the etudes appear in the real-world repertoire? Written with teachers and students in mind, this annotated edition offers key concepts for each etude along with practical advice on how to achieve these goals. As an added incentive, duets have been arranged for four etudes to allow for a performance of the etude without piano."--Back cover.
