Abstract This volume offers fifteen standard violin etudes provided with piano accompaniments by celebrated violinists and composers. Although the piano etude has been accepted as a musical work in miniature, violin etudes have more generally been confined to the practice room. There is a misconception, common among string players, that etudes serve solely to help acquire technique, as 'stepping stones' on the road to 'genuine' music by real composers. Consequently, many violinists regard and perform etudes as practice material devoid of real musical significance. Yet these works were composed by master violinists who understood the potential of their instrument. While the etudes emphasize and exploit certain technical attributes, they nonetheless have musical content. By presenting fifteen of the most important violin etudes with piano accompaniments by such artists as Auer, Elman, Heifetz, and Kreisler, this volume allows the musical possibilities of this genre to be more fully realized. This collection of accompanied etudes also features Lambert Massart's seminal pedagogical work The Art of Studying Kreutzer's Etudes. Massart was a student of Kreutzer, and became the most influential violin teacher of his age. He taught at the Paris Conservatoire for nearly half a century, and numbered Henryk Wieniawski and Fritz Kreisler among his pupils. Praised as the foundation of violin playing by such diverse artists as Flesch, Joachim, Szigeti and Wieniawski, Kreutzer's etudes are essential in forming a secure violin technique. A careful absorption of the instructions in Massart's Art of Studying Kreutzer's Etudes is tantamount to being guided through the craft of violin playing by Kreutzer himself.
