Abstract "What do we do with wounds--our own, others', and a nation's? We can turn away, avert our gaze. We can make a spectacle of suffering. Or like the doubting disciple who longed to touch Jesus's side, we can acquaint ourselves with the wounds: both the story they tell and the healing they prefigure. In The Wounds Are the Witness, Yolanda Pierce...weaves together her own memories, vignettes from Black life, and scenes from scripture, especially the passion of Christ. To work for liberation in a broken world, we cannot look away from crucified flesh. Bones from the Middle Passage, GI Bill benefits denied to Black veterans, women inmates shackled while giving birth: we must take all such wounds seriously. They testify to both the pain and the faith of a people."-- Provided by publisher.
Abstract How should we approach wounds--whether our own, those of others, or those of a nation? We have options: we can look away, ignore the suffering, or we can engage with the wounds, acknowledging both the pain they reveal and the potential for healing. In The Wounds Are the Witness, Yolanda Pierce reflects on her personal experiences, Black life, and scripture, particularly the passion of Christ. To work toward liberation in a fractured world, it is essential to confront the reality of suffering. From the legacy of the Middle Passage to the denial of GI Bill benefits to Black veterans, to the experiences of women incarcerated while giving birth, these wounds require serious consideration. They reveal both the struggles and the resilience of a community.
