| Abstract | "This study addresses the apparent artistic intimacy between the two playwrights. While temperamentally distinct, their works reveal intriguing affinities, arising from parallel drives towards social advancement and cohesion of masculine identity. The author argues that this drive involves an interrogation of the theology of grace that predominates in the Reformation social context. He further agues that although Shakespeare is a subtler writer, he produced playtexts and poems that were more influenced by Marlowe's religious radicalism than has been recognized."-- Provided by publisher. |
