| Abstract | "In the first-ever collection of new essays devoted to Oscar Wilde's once-notorious novel, of a beautiful young man who never ages, this wide-ranging volume gathers together new critical work by prominent scholars that deals with many aspects of "The Picture of Dorian Gray," from the early literary influences on the novel and its controversial early reception to the work's complex philosophical and aesthetic meaning as a "decadent" text and its afterlife in literature, film, dance, photography, theatrer, graphic fiction, and television. In addition to considering *Dorian Gray" as an iconic "queer" work that daringly challenged late-Victorian literary practices in the depiction of same-sex male eros, the volume explores "Dorian Gray" in terms of the history of the European novel and the book's innovations as a gothic, supernatural fictional work that defied the conventions of nineteenth-century realism as it solidified the era's Aestheticist and Decadent movements. Along with some striking illustrations of book editions of the novel, artists renderings of Dorian's painting, and images from popular adaptations, "Dorian Gray Forever" includes never-before translated early reviews of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" in the European press, which demonstrate that Wilde's novel was warmly appreciated outside of Britain and America, where it had met a mostly hostile reception.
