Abstract "The launch of an unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February 2022 not only caught the vast majority of Western academics studying Eastern Europe by surprise, but it vividly exposed an array of fundamental inadequacies or even outright flaws in the dominant Western viewpoints related to the study of Russia and its place in and relation to Eastern Europe's past and present. Scholars from an entire spectrum of related disciplines - from Soviet/Post-Soviet studies through more general East European studies to the specific fields of Russian and Ukrainian studies - encountered some serious challenges to the status quo of their respective fields. This collection presents essays by close to thirty prominent international scholars regarding the need to reconceptualize and redefine some of the firmly entrenched views, methods, and accepted schools of thought in the scholarly discourse and broader sphere of public discussion in the West dealing with the concepts of Russia, the history of Russia, Russian culture, and the current state of Russian society and the Russian Federation's political order."-- Provided by publisher.
