| Abstract | "The theme of the book is global crisis, conjunctures, and ruptures. The world is immersed in a social turmoil that has led to hasty reactions and a plethora of political explanations. The context is variously described as the breakdown of democracy, its exhaustion. At the same time, the scenario is characterized by responses of the popular classes to the worldwide chaos. These responses present new challenges in the form of an alternative life politics that can be called "biopolitics from below." The stimulating theoretical arguments of the study are of global relevance including relevance to Europe. The analysis relates to the correlation of social and political forces in the emergence of certain events, presents particular events as illustrations, and takes a historiographical-analytical route to argue why certain things happen in the way as they do. Usually, crisis is the explanatory factor. Ranabir Samaddar wants to go deeper and find out why some crises, and not all, produce unexpected outcomes. His main argument is that the essential gradient of a crisis is the correlation of forces at a particular time - and therefore the question of conjuncture.
