Abstract Mickey Weston is a musician with a growing reputation for being difficult to work with and a tendency to find himself between bands. But all that changes when Mickey contracts Acquired Manic Syndrome, a fatal disease that creates in oneself a state of euphoria right up to the moment of death. There's a cure, but because so many people would rather die short, happy lives, they don't want it. Mickey is one of those people. The government makes the cure mandatory, however, forcing Mickey to flee to the White Angel, a Chicago underground society for AMS carriers who revel in the disease. Calling themselves Happyheads, these infected renegades live in a chaotic Permanent Floating Rave, disseminating their sickness through sex. Here, Mickey falls in love with Iz, a fellow Happyhead, and as they progress through their final days together, Mickey must decide if he really wants to accept the cure and return to his old life ... or follow Iz into blissful oblivion.
