Abstract "Did you ever think that our great-great-grandmothers, who were nurses 100 years ago, could have been more financially and professionally independent than nurses today? In the 1930s, both physicians and nurses ran their own independent companies. Families would hire nurses and pay them directly for care, just like they paid physicians for house calls. It is not until the early-to-mid 20th century when the expansion of the U.S. public health and hospital systems drew private nurses into hospitals. Seeing the improved quality of patient care and the revenue potential from nursing services, hospitals began hiring nurses on staff and billing for nursing services-every patient bill back then had a separate line for nursing services. Nurses possessed business knowledge and acumen to know how much money they were bringing and how it should be used to provide the best possible care for patients and families"-- Provided by publisher.
